Encore Films will handle the release as Stephen Chow returns to the soccer-martial arts genre with an all-women team and heavy visual effects.
On June 23, Singapore-based Encore Films announced it acquired worldwide distribution rights outside mainland China for Kung Fu Soccer, the spin-off of Stephen Chow's 2001 hit Shaolin Soccer.
Chow, who turned 64 on June 22, revealed in a social media video that the film is in post-production following 2025 filming, marking his first directorial effort since 2019's The New King of Comedy.
The action comedy follows the Emei Women's Football Team as they compete in the fictional Supreme Invincible Cup, with an ensemble cast led by Zhang Xiaofei, Dilraba Dilmurat, and Lay Zhang Yixing.
Maoyan Entertainment will handle mainland China's release, while Encore targets a global launch later this year to capitalize on enthusiasm surrounding the FIFA World Cup.
Market analysts warn Kung Fu Soccer may face significant competition in July cinemas, as major titles like Moana and Spider-Man: Brand New Day are scheduled for release that month.
