Burkina Faso Farmer Expands Pineapple Fields in the Sahel

The farm expects 60 to 75 metric tons of pineapples and about 35 million CFA francs in revenue as more farmers join production.

  • Oumarou Compaor is pioneering pineapple production in the Sahel, challenging the belief that the region's dry climate cannot support the fruit. He founded his farm in 2018 outside Bobo-Dioulasso, where he now cultivates about 50 hectares.
  • Inspired by COVID-19 border closures, the pineapple initiative supports national efforts to boost food self-sufficiency for the country of 24 million people. Pineapples are now included in the government's formal development plan.
  • Other farmers are following suit, with Mdme Kaba expanding her Houet Province farm to about 60,000 seedlings. She noted that "with pineapple, there is profit," and the venture has supported her entire family.
  • Pineapple fields in the region have expanded to 248 acres as of November, catching the attention of military leaders. Under Capt. Ibrahim Traor, the government has presented food production as a key sovereignty issue.
  • Despite the growth, farmers face significant hurdles including investments in fertilizer, transport, and irrigation. Pascal Bazongo, a professor of soil science at the University of Fada, noted that farmers are adapting by irrigating with cool water during intense heat.
