Africa: CAF Appeal Board Media Statement
Senegal forfeited the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final by leaving the field, turning their 1-0 win into a 3-0 default loss to Morocco, CAF said.
- Tuesday, CAF’s appeals panel ruled Senegal national team forfeited the Jan. 18 final and awarded the Morocco national team a 3-0 win.
- After an annulled disciplinary verdict on procedural grounds, including the 'right to be heard', CAF disciplinary and appeals boards reached different outcomes with members from 54 member associations.
- Match footage shows most Senegal national team players leaving the field for almost 10 minutes amid protests as fans battled match stewards behind one goal; players returned, Morocco missed a penalty, and Senegal scored in extra time.
- Senegal’s federation said it will appeal to CAS in Lausanne after Tuesday’s ruling, while the Senegalese government called the decision 'manifestly erroneous', raising governance questions.
- Patrice Motsepe defended CAF’s process, saying CAF judicial bodies are independent and composed of respected lawyers and judges, and he acknowledged the chaotic final harmed CAF’s image but rejected favoritism toward Morocco, the 2030 World Cup co-host.
