Can horses help children heal from trauma?
SINGAPORE, JUL 7 – The VR equine therapy program helps children build emotional resilience and confidence before real horse interactions, benefiting around 70 youth at a local children’s home, Rotary Club said.
- The Rotary Club of Singapore partnered with Equal-Ark and StarHub to launch 'At Home with Horses,' a virtual reality equine-assisted learning program for children with trauma.
- The initiative responds to rising childhood mental health challenges and aims to ease real horse interaction by preparing children virtually in a safe, controlled environment.
- The program lets children virtually stroke horses' manes, feel their heartbeats, and receive guidance from a trainer, helping reduce anxiety and build confidence before physical sessions.
- Mr Low Kee Hong noted that the horse’s tranquility has a soothing impact on the child, while Dr. Shabbar highlighted that equine-assisted therapy offers profound emotional benefits for young individuals recovering from trauma.
- The project highlights the need for formal guidelines and funding to expand access to equine-assisted therapy amid growing demand and cost challenges in mental health care.
