Cambodia-US operation uncovers money laundering link to Sinaloa Cartel
Authorities said the network laundered money for the Sinaloa Cartel and seized over 200 kilograms of drugs and precursor chemicals.
On Friday, Cambodian and U.S. anti-drug agencies uncovered a network laundering money for the Sinaloa Cartel, seizing about $7 million in cryptocurrency during raids at four locations from Aug. 1 to 5 in Phnom Penh and Kandal province.
Collaborative efforts between DEA offices in Phnom Penh and New Jersey successfully uncovered the operation, targeting a conglomerate the Trump administration designated a "foreign terrorist organization."
Authorities also confiscated 440 pounds of illegal drugs and 2,200 pounds of precursor chemicals used to produce them, while police made several arrests and seized drug laboratories and storage facilities.
Over the past year, Cambodia has intensified crackdowns on criminal operations, shutting down scam centers and arresting several alleged kingpins who often employ thousands of foreigners in slave-like conditions.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime identified Latin American cartels as key actors in Southeast Asia, with the region now functioning as a supply, financial management, and logistics hub for multiple criminal organizations.
