Malaysia’s Anwar Says Thailand, Cambodia Keen to End Conflict
The meeting aims to halt border skirmishes and includes an ASEAN Observers Team and Malaysian military engagement, following renewed tensions despite the KL Peace Accord.
- On Dec 22, a special ASEAN Foreign Ministers meeting will convene in Kuala Lumpur, with Cambodia and Thailand agreeing to attend to prevent border escalation, Malaysia's Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.
- Both Cambodia and Thailand have resumed clashes despite signing the KL Peace Accord in October, which Thailand later suspended after soldiers were wounded by landmines.
- Initially scheduled for Dec 16, the meeting was postponed because several leaders said it would have been too soon, while Putrajaya said it is communicating daily with ASEAN counterparts and expects foreign ministers to deliberate.
- Following talks with United States President Donald Trump, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim appealed for an immediate ceasefire and said he is cautiously optimistic after speaking to both prime ministers.
- Anwar said both sides accepted the ASEAN Observers Team and Malaysia's Chief of Defence Force will deploy to the border in the coming days, hoping to `seal this understanding` by Dec 22.
