The recently concluded Russian State Duma elections will not bring about any political changes in the country, because their sole purpose was to demonstrate the superiority of the government, Russian politics expert Karmo Tüür told "Ringvaate".
The head of European diplomacy, Kaya Kalas, described the parliamentary elections in Russia as a “facade of democracy”, highlighting the exclusion of any opposition voice in the war in Ukraine. At the same time, European Union envoys agreed to lift sanctions against Russian businessmen Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman, amid reactions from some member states.
In Russia, what the local authorities are calling elections for one of the houses of parliament took place. However, in virtually every respect, aside from the facade of the proceedings, it's difficult to say that these were real, competitive, and democratic elections. It's worth considering why the Kremlin is cultivating such actions in a country that long ago stopped accepting democratic principles.
