Eid Now Recognized as an Official Holiday in California
The law lets eligible state and school employees use existing leave for Eid and allows schools to close through local agreements.
- California Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 2017 into law on Tuesday, formally recognizing Eidul Fitr and Eidul Azha as Islamic holidays in state statute.
- Assembly member Matt Haney introduced the measure in March with backing from the Council on American-Islamic Relations , the Muslim Impact Council, and the California Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander American Affairs.
- The law permits state and school employees to observe Eid using existing personal holiday credit, while K-12 schools and community colleges can close through locally negotiated agreements.
- CAIR-CA noted the law "addrssed a long-standing challenge" for the state's more than one million Muslim residents who struggle to balance faith with work and school obligations.
- The council stated that officially recognizing the holidays "sends the necessary and powerful message that California values" its Muslim community amid growing hostility.
