Newsom: Clean energy fuels two-thirds of California power grid
CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, JUL 14 – California cut greenhouse gas emissions 20% since 2000 while adding 25,000 megawatts of new clean energy since 2019, state officials reported.
- On Monday, the California Energy Commission reported that 67% of retail electricity in 2023 came from clean sources, making California the largest economy to run on two-thirds clean power.
- Under a state law signed by former Gov. Jerry Brown in 2018, California must reach 100% renewable and carbon-free electricity by 2045 to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
- From 2018 through the first quarter of 2025, battery storage capacity rose from 500 megawatts to 15,700 megawatts; a thirtyfold increase in storage capacity.
- Reaction came from Gov. Gavin Newsom, who said 'California is making our clean energy future a reality,' while a January fire at Moss Landing raised safety concerns.
- To meet rising electricity demand, California aims to need 52,000 megawatts of battery storage and generate 25 gigawatts from offshore wind by 2045.
