Correction: San Jose crime statistics
A Wednesday, July 2 front-page article incorrectly reported that San Jose’s crime rate rose 27% from 2023 to 2024 based on data submitted to the California Department of Justice. The department’s 2023 data for the city was incomplete due to the city’s transition to a new reporting standard; therefore, the 2023 data cannot be compared to 2024. The Bay Area News Group will return to this topic next week after further data review.

A July 1 report from the California attorney general’s office showed crime headed downward in the state. Data from 2024 showed a 6 percent decrease in violent crime, an 8.4 percent drop in property crime, a more than 10 percent dip in homicides, and 6.5 percent fewer aggravated assaults.
