California governor asks court to block Trump administration from using troops in immigration raids
- On Tuesday, California’s governor and state attorney general initiated a federal lawsuit and requested a temporary restraining order aimed at preventing President Trump from deploying National Guard troops and Marines in Los Angeles amid ongoing demonstrations related to immigration enforcement.
- The deployments follow federal immigration raids on June 6 that sparked mass protests and tensions due to the President's unilateral federalization of Guard troops without gubernatorial consent, reversing his 2020 stance and prior administration warnings against such moves.
- President Trump directed the deployment of 2,000 National Guard members with federal authority for a period of 60 days and sent 700 Marines to secure federal properties; however, California claims these forces are being used to assist ICE with civilian arrests, violating restrictions imposed by the Posse Comitatus Act.
- Newsom stated, "He's declared a war on culture, history, science, and knowledge," while Bonta said the President seeks to intimidate dissenters illegally, and only about 300 of the first 2,000 federalized Guardsmen have been actively deployed so far.
- The state contends that the militarization causes widespread panic, drains resources, infringes on state sovereignty, escalates unrest, and warns California may be the first with other states and democracy itself potentially next to face such federal actions.
