Calgary Wild FC Hires Australia's Leah Blayney as New Head Coach
The club said Blayney brings international experience after helping Japan win the AFC Women’s Asian Cup and qualify for the 2027 World Cup.
On Monday, Calgary Wild FC hired former Australian midfielder Leah Blayney as head coach following a global search that attracted more than 100 candidates.
Lydia Bedford, who led the Wild to a 9-14-2 record in the Northern Super League's inaugural season, departed earlier this year to coach England's under-23 team.
The 40-year-old from Katoomba, Australia, most recently served as an assistant coach for the Japanese women's team, helping navigate Japan to an AFC Women's Asian Cup title and 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup qualification.
Wild chief executive officer Lara Murphy said Blayney is "a respected and progressive coach in the women's game," citing her international experience as the clear choice for the role.
Blayney will join the club this week before Saturday's home match against defending Northern Super League champion Vancouver Rise, beginning her tenure immediately.
