Mount Royal University says data was stolen, deleted in June cyberattack
The university is offering credit monitoring and identity theft protection after some data was taken and deleted, and full recovery may not be possible.
On Tuesday, Calgary's Mount Royal University confirmed a cyberattack occurring last month compromised student and employee data stored on the institution's H drive.
An unauthorized actor accessed specific H drive folders, stealing data before deleting the contents to impede recovery, and also deleted departmental information on the University's J drive.
Mount Royal University is offering two years of credit monitoring and identity theft protection to all current employees and those employed within the past five years.
The University reported the incident to the Alberta Information and Privacy Commissioner, though officials noted full data recovery for the J drive may not be possible.
Investigators expect the analysis to take weeks or months, while Mount Royal University will begin notifying affected individuals within the week regarding compromised data.
