Calgarians living in epicentre of latest watermain break say city is leaving them in the dark
The City of Calgary is fast-tracking a parallel steel pipe project to replace the ruptured Bearspaw South Feeder Main by December 2026 to protect the water system.
- City of Calgary officials say work to twin the Bearspaw South Feeder Main begins Jan. 23, targeting completion in Dec. 2026.
- After two catastrophic breaks in less than two years, the city says Calgary’s drinking water system is critically vulnerable and the single Bearspaw feeder main needs urgent replacement.
- The city awarded contracts to Ward & Burke Microtunnelling Ltd. and Graham Construction & Engineering Inc. as construction manager, using microtunnelling under 16 Avenue, Bow River, Sarcee Trail, and the CPKC rail line, with work running around the clock and long-lead pipes ordered.
- Until the new pipe takes over, the city says crews are on standby with temporary flood barriers and mitigation measures, warning significant risk remains while the existing line stays in service.
- Nearby residents say Bowness, Montgomery, and nearby neighbourhoods see ripped roads and late-night digging while lacking clear answers from the city or 311, though the city plans email updates and information sessions soon.
