Calcutta HC Appoints Special Officer to Manage Debit Operations of TMC's Frozen Bank Accounts
The party may use the money only for day-to-day operations and legal costs under supervision until Sept. 30, the court said.
- On Thursday, the Calcutta High Court allowed the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC to access three frozen bank accounts, appointing retired judge Subrata Talukdar as a special officer to supervise day-to-day party and legal expenditures.
- Kolkata Police froze the three accounts on June 19 after rebel TMC MLAs Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha alleged financial misuse; the Enforcement Directorate subsequently froze Rs 440 crore under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
- Senior lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi argued the complaint had an "oblique motive" to cripple the party, while the court questioned the "lightning speed" with which police froze the accounts following the FIR.
- Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya permitted transactions solely for party operations and legal costs, authorizing a monthly honorarium of Rs 1.25 lakh for Talukdar to oversee cheque encashment by authorized signatories.
- This interim arrangement remains effective until September 30, 2026, while the Election Commission continues reviewing the leadership dispute between the Mamata Banerjee-aligned faction and the rival group seeking official recognition.
