Mariners' Cal Raleigh Takes First Swings Since Right Oblique Injury, Hits Off a Tee
The catcher’s first significant hitting since a right oblique injury is part of a gradual return plan, with more swings and rehab outings ahead.
On Friday, Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh took 30 swings off a tee at the team's Arizona complex, marking his first significant hitting since suffering a right oblique strain on May 14.
Raleigh landed on the injured list for the first time in his career on May 14, after playing through pain that resulted in a 0 for 38 hitless streak from April 28 to May 12.
General manager Justin Hollander said Raleigh is also catching and throwing to 130 feet, noting the team wants "to build responsibly, and make sure that when he cuts it loose 100%, that he feels 100%."
Raleigh is scheduled to hit again on Saturday in Arizona before traveling to Seattle for a check-in, where Manager Dan Wilson eagerly awaits his return to provide leadership around the club.
Meanwhile, All-Star utilityman Brendan Donovan continues recovering from a left groin strain on a weightless treadmill, though Hollander expects both players will require minor league rehab assignments before returning to the major league club.
