Cal Raleigh successful as 4 of 5 challenges reverse calls in first All-Star use of robot umpire

FULTON COUNTY, GEORGIA, JUL 16 – Cal Raleigh led four successful challenges overturning umpire calls using the new Automated Ball-Strike system in its All-Star debut, improving officiating accuracy, MLB said.

  • Major League Baseball used the Automated Balls and Strikes system with a challenge format during the All-Star Game on Tuesday night.
  • The system underwent testing since 2019 in the minor leagues, initially calling all pitches before switching to a challenge-based approach due to player input.
  • During the All-Star Game, players such as Cal Raleigh and Jacob Wilson successfully challenged umpire calls, with four of five challenges reversing calls and one challenge lost.
  • Rob Manfred said the rapid correction of bad calls ‘‘without interfering with the time of game’’ is beneficial and the 11-man competition committee will consider ABS implementation.
  • Player concerns focus on the ABS error margin of up to half an inch and how the number of challenges may affect game flow and fairness going forward.
