Cal made offensive coordinator switch at halftime last week
Pat McCann took over play-calling after Cal had averaged 18.3 points per game against FBS opponents.
On Saturday, California head coach Tosh Lupoi promoted passing game coordinator Pat McCann to call plays, replacing offensive coordinator Jordan Somerville during the Golden Bears' 39-31 loss to UNLV in Las Vegas.
Somerville, hired from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers despite lacking coordinator experience, struggled to lead the unit against FBS competition, averaging just 18.3 points per game before the contest.
The offense scored 24 points in the second half after managing only seven initially, with Lupoi noting, "I just changed it up, I thought it was time," regarding the adjustment.
Defending the decision on Tuesday, General manager Ron Rivera called the move aggressive, stating "If you continue to do the same thing, isn't that insanity?" regarding the offensive struggles.
Quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele remains questionable for Saturday's game against Virginia Tech after sustaining a concussion, with Jackson Brousseau prepared to start following a 200-yard, two-touchdown relief performance.
