'I Just Start Stabbing Him': Army ROTC Cadets Who Killed ODU Shooter Speak Publicly for the First Time
Army ROTC cadets say their quick response stopped the gunman and helped save lives, and several later received Purple Hearts.
- In a 17-minute video posted Wednesday to the official Army ROTC YouTube page, cadets recounted how they subdued a gunman who attacked their Military Science IV class at Old Dominion University on March 12.
- Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, a former student with a prior conviction for aiding the Islamic State, entered the classroom and opened fire on Lieutenant Colonel Brandon Shah after asking if the group was an ROTC class.
- Lunging with a pocket knife, Cadet Louis Ancheta joined Shah to wrestle the shooter while fellow cadets intervened to pry the weapon away and neutralize the attacker.
- Tragically, Lieutenant Colonel Shah died from his injuries, while Ancheta and other cadets received Purple Hearts and meritorious service medals for stopping the gunman and performing emergency first aid.
- Safety concerns at Constant Hall resurfaced in a dispute between the ODU Faculty Senate and President Brian Hemphill, with the Board of Visitors rebuking the Senate for citing a 2024 email warning about security vulnerabilities.
