Cabinet clears Rs 10,783 crore railway multi-tracking projects across five states
The projects will add 656 km of track and improve connectivity to 4,790 villages, officials said.
- On Wednesday, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved eight railway projects totaling Rs 20,804 crore for infrastructure modernization.
- The approved expansion includes five projects across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana, alongside three multi-tracking initiatives spanning West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.
- These eight projects will increase the Indian Railways network by 1,196 km and boost freight capacity by 47 million tonnes per annum, improving connectivity for around 4,790 villages with a combined population of about 56 lakh.
- Planned under the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, the upgrades focus on enhancing multi-modal connectivity and logistics efficiency; Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw noted these efforts are part of a 12-year modernization drive.
- The expansion will improve access to tourist destinations including the Taratarini Temple and Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to planting around 2 crore trees.
