- On March 10, 2026, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved two railway projects: the Sainthia–Pakur and Santragachi–Kharagpur fourth lines, costing Rs 4,474 crore.
- Under the PM‑Gati Shakti National Master Plan, the works will boost multimodal connectivity and logistic efficiency, and the CCEA communique said the projects align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to make the region ‘Atmanirbhar’.
- Covering about 192 kilometres, the projects will add freight capacity of 31 MTPA and reduce oil import by 06 Crore Litres, officials said.
- To be completed by 2030-31, the multi‑tracking will enhance connectivity to nearly 5,652 villages with a population of about 147 lakh and boost access to tourist destinations including Bolpur‑Shantiniketan and Tarapith.
- Officials noted the routes are essential for commodity movement such as coal, cement, iron and steel, foodgrains, POL and containers, and a government statement said, 'These projects will provide seamless connectivity for the movement of people, goods, and services.
