ByteDance in talks with China's Iluvatar CoreX to purchase AI chips
The potential deal would make Iluvatar CoreX ByteDance’s third major domestic GPU supplier as China’s AI chipmakers gain ground.
- ByteDance is in talks to purchase at least 50,000 chips from Shanghai-based Iluvatar CoreX for inference work, which would make the startup the company's third major domestic supplier after Huawei and Cambricon.
- These negotiations reflect a broader shift in China's AI infrastructure market, where domestic chipmakers captured nearly 41 per cent of the accelerator server segment last year, eroding Nvidia's once-dominant position in the country.
- Iluvatar CoreX, which listed in Hong Kong in January, reported 1 billion yuan in 2025 revenue, with total shipments projected to jump 139 per cent this year to over 100,000 chips using its Zhikai series.
- Such efforts by local firms are gaining traction as Beijing promotes domestic technology to enhance self-reliance amid US export controls, with ByteDance also considering a similar agreement with Baidu for its Kunlunxin chips.
- Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated the company's market share in China has effectively fallen to zero, while Tencent Chief Strategy Officer James Mitchell noted in May that domestic AI chips would become available in large quantities later this year.
