Byron Allen Media Sells WREX and 9 Other Stations to WIFR Parent Company, Gray Media
UNITED STATES, AUG 8 – The acquisition expands Gray Media's reach into three new markets and creates duopolies in seven others, pending FCC approval in Q4, officials said.
- On Aug. 08, 2025 in Atlanta, Gray Media, Inc. announced the acquisition of 10 stations from Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group for $171 million.
- Amid rising debt and downsizing, Allen Media Group has undergone cuts after a $1-billion buying spree in recent years.
- With about 180 stations already, Gray Media’s portfolio spans 113 markets and reaches approximately 37 percent of US television households.
- Gray Media expects to strengthen its presence in seven markets by creating duopolies for expanded local news, weather and sports programming, pending FCC approval and ownership waivers.
- The deal will bring Gray into three new markets: Columbus-Tupelo, Mississippi; Terre Haute, Indiana; and West Lafayette, Indiana, with each acquiring the highest-rated all-day station in 2024, according to Comscore.
