This Chinese Hypercar Just Became the Fastest Production EV in Nürburgring History
The Yangwang U9 hypercar set a new Nürburgring production electric vehicle record with a 6:59.157 lap, beating the previous time by five seconds, officials confirmed.
- With a lap of 6:59.157, the Yangwang U9 Xtreme set a Nürburgring record last month, claimed by BYD as the fastest EV production vehicle.
- BYD used the U9 platform to push engineering limits, announcing the Nürburgring run only weeks after setting a 496.22 km/h top speed.
- Driven by German racer Moritz Kranz, the Nürburgring run was certified by Nürburgring officials and the Yangwang U9 uses a 1,200-volt platform with four electric motors producing nearly 3,000 hp.
- The run shaved five seconds off the previous record, a 7:04.957 lap set earlier this year by the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra, making the U9 the first production EV to break the 7-minute barrier.
- Built in a limited run, the Yangwang U9 Xtreme has about 30 units planned, prompting questions about its `production EV` classification and relevance for 99.9% of EV buyers.
