Wealthy businessman goes on trial over murder of Maltese journalist
Prosecutors say Yorgen Fenech ordered the killing after Caruana Galizia was about to publish a compromising article, and five others have already been convicted.
- On Wednesday, Maltese tycoon Yorgen Fenech went on trial in Valletta accused of orchestrating the 2017 car-bomb assassination of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. Fenech faces charges of complicity and criminal association.
- Prosecutors allege Fenech ordered the killing because Caruana Galizia was investigating his offshore company, 17 Black, which allegedly funneled corrupt payments to Maltese leaders. The journalist was killed by a bomb hidden under her car seat.
- Middleman Melvin Theuma recruited the killers after Fenech allegedly offered 150,000 euros, with 30,000 euros paid upfront and 120,000 euros after the murder. Theuma later confessed his role after receiving a pardon.
- Five individuals have been convicted in relation to the murder, including bomb suppliers who received life sentences in 2025. A 2021 public inquiry concluded the state should "shoulder responsibility" for creating an "atmosphere of impunity."
- Press freedom watchdog Reporters Without Borders wrote that the trial "revives hope that justice will finally be served for a crime perpetrated nearly nine years ago." Proceedings are expected to last several weeks before a jury panel.
