Most Canadian workers support equity efforts despite some backlash: report
A majority of Canadian workers support equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives, with 54% favoring EDI despite some backlash and 47% saying it improves job opportunities.
- On Oct. 30, 2025, the Future Skills Centre and Diversity Institute reported that 54 per cent of Canadian workers view EDI favourably, based on a survey of 5,603 individuals.
- Wendy Cukier said Canada's population has changed dramatically, with women roughly half, racialized individuals a quarter, and about 27 per cent with disabilities shaping equity efforts and talent attraction.
- Survey data show 61 per cent support for EDI among racialized workers, 59 per cent among LGBTQ+ individuals, 50 per cent among white respondents, and 34 per cent for older white straight men.
- Amid U.S. policy shifts including an executive order, some firms scaled back equity efforts—Meta, Amazon, Target, Shopify Inc. and McCarthy Tétrault—while report authors urged companies to stay the course.
- Experts urged businesses and non-profits to sustain EDI efforts, with Sarah Kaplan warning initiatives often `jump from issue to issue` and Sarah Saska recommending focus on measurable impact over acronyms.
