Bus accident in eastern India kills at least 5 pilgrims
SOUTH CHOTANAGPUR DIVISION, JHARKHAND, JUL 29 – Bus driver fatigue caused a collision killing at least 18 Hindu pilgrims and injuring about two dozen during the sacred month of Shravan, officials said.
- On Tuesday in eastern India, a bus carrying Hindu pilgrims collided with a truck loaded with cooking gas cylinders, killing at least 18 and injuring about two dozen, officials said.
- The bus driver dozed off while driving the pilgrims, who were returning from Deoghar, about 268 kilometers from Ranchi, Lakra said.
- Data shows high annual road fatalities in India, with more than 172,000 died in road crashes in 2023, officials said.
- In early Tuesday hours, officials said some of the injured admitted to local hospitals are in critical condition, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deepest condolences.
