In Burundi, six people were lynched to death on Monday, 30 June, late in the afternoon, some of whom were burned alive. This happened on the hill of Gasarara, 10 kilometres from Bujumbura, where the victims were attacked by young armed men who accused them of witchcraft, after unexplained deaths in the region.
Gasarara, Burundi — At least six people died brutally in Burundi after being accused of witchcraft by members of a militia linked to the ruling party, local authorities told the AFP agency. The victims were burned alive, stoned or beaten to death in an act of violence that has been described as “a barbarism without a name.” The incident occurred last Monday in the town of Gasarara, about 10 kilometres from the capital, Bujumbura.
Burundi is a predominantly Christian country, where traditional beliefs are deeply rooted, and inexplicable deaths are often attributed to witchcraft.
"Late on Monday afternoon, a group of young Imbonerakure members broke into the homes of about 10 people accused of witchcraft. They then attacked them," an official from the Gasarara commune told AFP on condition of anonymity. "Six people were killed, two of whom were burned alive.
