Burnham attends first Everton match since becoming Prime Minister
Burnham, a longtime Everton fan, also backed future World Cup bids and said major events can drive regional growth and jobs.
On Saturday, Prime Minister Andy Burnham attended his first Everton match since taking office, watching the Premier League game against Crystal Palace at Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool alongside his wife, Marie-France van Heel, and former footballer Peter Reid.
The former Greater Manchester mayor is a long-time Everton supporter who took office at Downing Street last month, with Reid also present when Burnham assumed the Prime Minister role.
Everton secured a comfortable 2-0 Premier League victory over Crystal Palace, with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Thierno Barry scoring to provide manager David Moyes an early-season morale boost.
This victory provides crucial relief for Everton after the team endured a winless final seven games last season, which cost them a return to European football.
Burnham recently called it "insane" that the UK has hosted only one men's World Cup, and the Government continues pursuing major sporting events, including active bids for the 2035 women's World Cup.
