Burnham announces plans to clean up worst three illegal waste dumps
The enforcement package includes raising maximum fines from £300 to £5,000 and deploying drones, additional police, and National Crime Agency resources to dismantle organised waste operations.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced a new crackdown on illegal waste gangs, with the government funding clean-up of three major sites including Midland Road in Bradford.
These illegal sites contain around 22,000 tonnes of waste combined and are harming an estimated 2,900 families, prompting action from Burnham and officials.
Environment Secretary Dame Angela Eagle introduced the Waste Crime Crackdown Group to dismantle operations, with fines for waste offenses rising from £300 to £5,000.
West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester will pilot the new region-led approach, with Kimberley MacPherson, Environment Agency area director for Yorkshire, welcoming the commitment to assess Midland Road.
Authorities will seize assets including cash, cars, and property acquired through illegal operations, using expanded enforcement powers to dismantle criminal networks profiting from waste.
