Bulgarians split over new Eurozone membership
At the beginning of 2026, Bulgaria joined the Eurozone. It is a historic shift that comes at a moment of deep polarisation in the country and mass anti-corruption protests. They culminated in the resignation of its government and its president. FRANCE 24's Elitsa Gadeva and Juliette Prudhomme were on the ground during that first week of transition.
Starting on Sunday, 1 February 2026, the euro will become the only legal means of payment in Bulgaria, the Commission for Consumer Protection in the neighbouring country (CPC).
Bulgaria has become the 21st member of the euro area at the beginning of this year in the face of opposition from half of its electoral power, leaving only a few countries in the EU that have not yet passed the euro.
