Gerry Meehan, One of the First Buffalo Sabres Players and an Influential GM, Dies at 79
Meehan played 10 NHL seasons and helped Alexander Mogilny defect to North America, opening the door for other Soviet players.
The Buffalo Sabres announced on Saturday that former general manager and winger Gerry Meehan has died at age 79. The team was informed by a member of his family.
A Toronto native, Meehan was a member of the inaugural Sabres roster in 1970, recording the franchise's first assist and later serving as the team's second captain before his trading to Vancouver in October 1974.
Throughout his 10-year NHL career, the winger played for Buffalo, Vancouver, Atlanta, and Washington before returning to Buffalo in 1984 to join the front office under general manager Scotty Bowman.
Working with director of player development Don Luce, Meehan helped Alexander Mogilny become the first player to defect from the Soviet Union to North America in 1989, opening doors for other Soviet players.
Meehan is survived by his wife, three children and four grandchildren. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman called him "a pillar of the franchise" whose mentorship shaped countless players and executives in recent years.
