Ofcom Investigates BT and Three for Failing to Connect 999 Calls

Ofcom probes whether BT and Three met regulatory duties after outages disrupted calls for millions, including emergency 999 services, during summer incidents.

  • On July 24 and 25, Ofcom opened investigations into BT Group and Three after major outages disrupted mobile calls across Britain, including emergency services, Ofcom said.
  • Three reported incidents on June 24 and June 25 that disrupted voice services and affected customers using MVNOs like ID Mobile.
  • More than 79 per cent of clients reported problems on the outage day, and Three, serving 27 million customers, amplified the disruption across the market.
  • The regulator said it will seek to establish the facts and determine whether the two firms failed to comply with regulatory obligations, following a £17.5m fine for BT and £1.9m penalty for Three.
  • BT said it will co-operate fully with Ofcom and apologised for the July 24 and 25 fault, while Three said compensation will be offered case-by-case and has been approached for comment.
