Boston Bruins and Edmonton Oilers to Play NHL Games in Germany in 2027
The NHL announced Thursday that the Boston Bruins and Edmonton Oilers will play two regular-season games each in Germany during the 2027-28 season, with the Bruins competing in Munich and the Oilers in Leon Draisaitl's native Cologne.
Aiming to deepen fan engagement and grow the sport in Europe, the NHL and NHLPA committed to regular-season games in Germany for at least three more seasons. NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly called the initiative a significant opportunity.
Head coach Marco Sturm leads a roster with strong German ties, including Munich native JJ Peterka and fellow forward Lukas Reichel. Sturm served as his country's national team general manager from 2015-18.
The Bruins will play at SAP Garden in Munich, marking the city's first time hosting NHL regular-season competition. Boston Bruins CEO Charlie Jacobs said the team looks forward to "representing the Bruins and the city of Boston."
This trip marks the Bruins' second foray into Europe for regular-season games, following a 2010 season opener in Prague. The organization's international history also includes a 23-game European exhibition tour in 1959 and preseason matches in China in 2018.
