Brothers used 'high level of violence' in airport arrest, court told
- Two siblings from Rochdale, Mohammed Fahir Amaaz, aged 20, and his elder brother Muhammad Amaad, 26, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court today to face trial over alleged assaults that took place at Manchester Airport on July 23, 2024.
- The charges followed a video showing Amaaz assaulting Abdulkareem Ismaeil in a Starbucks and both brothers assaulting three police officers, with both denying the allegations and claiming self-defence.
- The prosecution outlined that the defendants engaged in extremely violent behavior, with Amaaz headbutting Ismaeil in front of children and assaulting PCs Marsden, Ward, and Cook, resulting in actual bodily harm.
- Paul Greaney KC said the case was “not a complicated case” as events were captured on CCTV and body-worn cameras, predicting the jury would conclude the defendants acted unlawfully, not in self-defence.
- Judge Flewitt instructed jurors to avoid media and social media influence, highlighting the seriousness of the assaults and the legal process beginning with a panel of 12 jurors selected today.
