Brooks Koepka Is 1 Back at the Byron Nelson, with Scottie Scheffler Lurking in His Hometown Event
On Thursday, Brooks Koepka shot an 8-under 63 to take the lead at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson at TPC Craig Ranch. The 36-year-old American golfer carded six birdies and one eagle during his bogey-free opening round.
A Lanny Wadkins-led redesign costing nearly $25 million overhauled TPC Craig Ranch before the 2024 event, significantly altering the greens. Koepka noted the changes were substantial after finishing runner-up at the Nelson in 2016.
Playing alongside Koepka, Scottie Scheffler recorded a five-under 66 to begin his title defense, while Kim carded a 7-under 64. Kim trailed Koepka by one shot after strong performances on both nines.
Emiliano Grillo, Keith Mitchell, Stephan Jaeger, and Michael Thorbjornsen share second place at 64, one shot ahead of Doug Ghim and Mackenzie Hughes. The chasing pack remains within striking distance.
Seeking his first victory since returning to the PGA Tour from LIV Golf, Koepka said winning "would be a big confidence boost." He lacks exemptions for the $20 million signature events after his return.
