Brockton mayor charged with assault, battery, Plymouth DA says
The district attorney’s office is awaiting a hearing after the charge, which follows a harassment case involving a Brockton High School student.
On Tuesday, the Plymouth County District Attorney's Office confirmed that Massachusetts State Police are seeking a criminal charge of assault and battery against Brockton Mayor Moises Rodrigues, with a clerk magistrate hearing pending in Brockton District Court.
The filing follows an investigation into a complaint from a 17-year-old Brockton High School student regarding an incident at the Huntington Day Parade in May, where she alleged Rodrigues touched her waist and shoulder.
Although a judge recently declined to extend a harassment protection order, Judge Scott D. Peterson called the mayor's conduct "unwelcome, offensive, and certainly unprofessional," though it did not meet legal criteria for extension.
Allegations gained public attention on June 6 when a mother confronted Rodrigues at a Brockton High School graduation, yelling, "You know what you did to my daughter," prompting police intervention.
Officials report two students have brought complaints against Rodrigues in recent months, and the Plymouth District Attorney's Office is currently awaiting the scheduling of a hearing while the mayor's office has not yet responded to requests for comment.
