UK to Ban Ransomware Payments by Public Sector Organizations
UNITED KINGDOM, JUL 22 – The UK government aims to disrupt ransomware gangs by banning ransom payments in public sectors and mandating private businesses to report any ransom payment intentions, with 75% public support.
- On July 22 in London, the UK government plans to ban public-sector bodies and critical national infrastructure from paying ransom demands, including the NHS, local councils and schools.
- Amid the Plan for Change rollout, the Home Office ran a public consultation from January 14 to April 8 receiving 273 responses, as part of the broader `Plan for Change` framework.
- Under the proposals, private businesses must notify the government before paying ransoms and can receive advice and support, while mandatory reporting is being developed to equip law enforcement with intelligence to disrupt criminal activities.
- In his statement, Security Minister Dan Jarvis said `Ransomware is a predatory crime that puts the public at risk, wrecks livelihoods and threatens the services we depend on`, and added `We're determined to smash the cyber criminal business model and protect the services we all rely on as we deliver our Plan for Change`.
