UK universities told to crack down on antisemitism after synagogue attack

The government demands universities adopt clear policies and staff training to tackle antisemitism after 3,500 incidents were reported last year, according to the Community Security Trust.

  • On Saturday, the British government said universities must take stronger action to protect Jewish students, with Bridget Phillipson, Education Secretary, urging vice-chancellors to take practical steps.
  • After the Manchester attack on October 2 that killed two men outside Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue, university leaders warned students planning protests on October 7 to think carefully.
  • New rules introduced in August require clear policies, and the Department for Education will offer some 600 training sessions for university staff over the coming weeks.
  • Phillipson will meet shortly with university leaders, the Office for Students, Universities UK, police and faith community organisations, while Arif Ahmed said the regulator would act if universities fail their duties and the Department for Education urged managing protests to allow full student participation.
  • Data from Britain's interior ministry on Thursday showed Jews faced the highest religious hate crime rate in England and Wales, while last year saw more than 3,500 incidents and a 117% rise in campus antisemitism, the Community Security Trust reported.
