At least 12 people have died in wildfires near Bédar in Almeria Province, with authorities believing the victims were foreign tourists who attempted to flee on foot after abandoning vehicles.
Sergeant Pedro Barre said experience prompted the team to re-check the area, eventually hearing faint sounds. Rescuer Rafael Zea said their injuries meant it must have taken a "Titanic effort" for them to be heard.
The two unidentified hikers are thought to have suffered 40% burns, according to Spanish national broadcaster RTVE. They remain in serious condition in hospital, though authorities confirm their lives are not believed to be in danger.
