British Airways owner orders 53 Boeing and Airbus planes in bet on long-haul flying

  • On Friday, International Airlines Group , the parent company of British Airways and Iberia, placed an order for 53 new aircraft from Boeing and Airbus, with the planes scheduled to be received between 2028 and 2033.
  • This order followed the recent UK-US trade deal on Thursday that eased tariffs on aeroplane parts and other goods, prompting IAG to maintain confidence despite economic uncertainty.
  • The purchase includes 32 Boeing 787-10 jets for British Airways, priced at $12.7 billion list value, and 21 Airbus planes costing $7.8 billion, with a third of aircraft for growth and the rest as replacements.
  • IAG CEO Luis Gallego described the order as a significant achievement that will reinforce the company’s key regions of operation in the years ahead, while also highlighting continued strong demand for air travel despite ongoing economic uncertainties.
  • The orders reflect IAG's ongoing growth after a strong first quarter with €176 million net profit, offer Boeing positive news amid past production and regulatory issues, and suggest reduced UK-US trade friction.
