The UK has proposed nuclear umbrella protection to nine allied nations as part of the Joint Expeditionary Force alliance. This was reported by the Finnish newspaper Iltalehti.
Lithuania and other Baltic and Nordic countries may soon find themselves under the UK's nuclear umbrella, Finnish media reports. An agreement is expected to be reached in Oslo in November, a message conveyed to the capitals by the UK's First Sea Lord, who recently visited Vilnius.
The British nuclear deterrence capability will be used to support Finland and other member countries of the United Expeditionary Force (JEF), which includes the Nordic States, by Gwin Jenkins, Chief of Staff of the British Navy, in an interview with Iltalehti.
The new mechanism will be able to work even without the activation of NATO's fifth article
Nine countries in Northern Europe can receive nuclear protection from the UK. This will strengthen the “third pillar” of the region's defense and will be a response to threats from Russia.
