British Expat Convicted of Terminally Ill Wife's Manslaughter Dies in Cyprus
His daughter said he died after a recent hospital admission, following a 2023 manslaughter conviction in a case that drew worldwide debate over mercy killing.
David Hunter, a 78-year-old British expatriate, died in a Cypriot hospital recently, according to his family. His daughter Lesley Cawthorne confirmed the death.
Hunter, a former coal miner from Ashington, Northumberland, was convicted of manslaughter in 2023 for suffocating his wife Janice in their Tremithousa, Paphos home in December 2021.
During his trial, Hunter testified that Janice, 74, "begged him for weeks" to end her life as she battled terminal blood cancer. The court heard her suffering motivated his actions.
Cawthorne, from Norwich, told the BBC her father was "a good, kind man" who is "very much missed by his family and friends." He passed away after treatment for an infection.
Hunter had remained in Cyprus following his 2023 release to stay near his wife's grave, though he recently faced an appeal from the Attorney General challenging his sentencing.
