More than 4,000 Nurses Go on Strike in Boston, the Largest Nursing Strike in Massachusetts History
The Massachusetts Nurses Association says the hospital’s proposal would raise premium costs for more than half of its members.
On Wednesday, July 8, 2026, roughly 4,000 nurses at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston began a one-day strike, marking the largest nurses strike in Massachusetts history after contract negotiations with Mass General Brigham stalled.
Negotiations remain deadlocked over wages, with the Massachusetts Nurses Association reporting management refuses to move off a 0% cost-of-living increase proposal while MGB claims Brigham nurses already earn among the state's highest salaries.
Although the strike lasts one day, MGB has locked out unionized nurses through the weekend because nearly 1,300 temporary nurses hired to maintain operations are contractually required to work five-day shifts.
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu urged both sides to continue bargaining, while a separate group of 450 MGB Home Care clinicians also launched a seven-day strike seeking their first union contract.
Unless a settlement is reached sooner, striking nurses are scheduled to return to work at 7 a.m. on Monday, July 13, while MGB maintains that patient care will continue with limited disruptions.
