Brentwood rows to 5 golds en route to 2nd place national finish
Brentwood won 11 medals in 13 finals, including five golds, and defended its senior women’s eight title as E.L. Crossley took the overall crown.
Brentwood College School placed second overall at the 79th Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Association National Championships, held June 5 to 7 in St. Catharines, Ont., among 130 competing clubs.
The school's 59 student-athletes secured 11 medals from 13 finals entries, finishing just behind Ontario's E.L. Crossley, which claimed the overall title at the regatta featuring 651 entries.
Legendary coach Brian Carr led the senior women's program to gold, becoming the only coach in Canadian history to win national titles in eight distinct U17 and U19 categories.
Two other Cowichan Valley programs also earned medals, including Shawnigan Lake School, which entered seven crews and won one gold, one silver, and one bronze medal.
Brentwood head of rowing David Calder noted Friday saw 'unbelievably hot conditions,' while the team built on a 50-year history for the women's program.
