Breanna Stewart urges a safe space as transgender debate sparks rallies at Fever games
Breanna Stewart says the league should remain a safe space as small protests and planned rallies follow debate over transgender participation.
New York Liberty forward Breanna Stewart emphasized the WNBA's inclusive environment Saturday, urging fans to maintain the arena as a "safe space" ahead of her team's evening matchup against the Indiana Fever in Brooklyn.
Tensions have escalated recently, with protests occurring outside Indiana Fever games following an ESPN profile published last month where Sophie Cunningham expressed opposition to transgender women competing in women's sports.
During a game in Atlanta last Sunday between the Dream and the Fever, WNBA security personnel incorrectly asked fans to cover shirts displaying messages about transgender participation; the league later acknowledged the fans should have been free to wear them.
Stewart stated that while everyone is entitled to opinions, efforts to divide teams and players "shouldn't be tolerated," adding the league must remain a place where fans "can feel like they can be themselves."
The WNBA currently faces an ongoing debate regarding transgender inclusion, as rallies from opposing viewpoints persist and test the league's goal of serving as an inclusive platform for all players and fans.
