Australia’s First Suspected Case of H5 Bird Flu Found in WA
Samples from the brown skua were sent for confirmation as officials warned Australia’s first mainland H5 case could trigger a rapid national response.
Federal Agriculture Minister Julie Collins confirmed on Friday a suspected H5 bird flu case in a migratory brown skua found in southern Western Australia, marking the first potential mainland detection of the deadly strain.
While Australia remained the last continent free of the virus, H5 has devastated wildlife globally, killing more than 13,000 elephant seal pups on Heard Island, 4,000km southwest of Perth, since October.
Samples sent to the CSIRO's Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness are expected to return results on Saturday, backed by a $113 million government investment in national preparedness announced this week.
Officials report no evidence of infection in poultry, yet urge Australians to avoid touching sick or dead wildlife, record locations, and report sightings through Birdflu.gov.au to maintain surveillance.
Burnet Institute associate professor Suman Majumdar stated the potential case is "something we need to take seriously," emphasizing that confirming detection and activating response plans remain the immediate priority.
