Senate Defers Action On PFIPC Pending ICPC Investigation
Lawmakers voted to await an ICPC inquiry after rejecting a separate legislative probe into the PFIPC, which had received ₦1.3 billion in the 2026 budget.
- On Wednesday, the Senate rejected a motion to launch a comprehensive investigation into the ₦1.3 billion budgetary allocation for the purported Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council .
- The controversy stems from allegations surrounding the PFIPC, an entity the Presidency describes as "fake, fictitious and unauthorised," yet which appeared in the 2026 Appropriation Act with an allocation of ₦1.3 billion.
- Senator Suleiman Kawu presented the motion under Senate Standing Orders, arguing the allocation undermines institutional credibility; Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin countered that President Bola Tinubu had tasked the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission with investigating.
- The Senate's decision contrasts sharply with the House of Representatives, which recently adopted a motion to investigate the allocation, while President Bola Tinubu mandated the ICPC to submit findings within 30 days.
- Separately, Femi Gbajabiamila issued a 72-hour ultimatum to Adeniyi Adeyemi, who allegedly demanded a 48 per cent share of the budget, to retract accusations or face a ₦10 billion defamation suit.
