BREAKING: It's official - Cobblers have new owners as SAC complete takeover

The club will remain debt-free as existing owners keep 30% and new co-chairmen João Xavier and Tim Chamberlain join the board.

  • On Wednesday, investment group Sports Alpha Capital completed its takeover of Northampton Town, acquiring a 70% shareholding in the League Two club led by founders Joao Xavier, Tim Chamberlain, and former Brazil striker Alexandre Pato.
  • The club enters this new chapter debt-free after announcing a pre-tax loss of just under £3m in April 2026. Xavier and Chamberlain stated they are "extremely proud to become custodians" of the historic football club.
  • Existing owners Kelvin Thomas, David Bower, and Nigel Le Quesne will collectively retain a 30% stake while Thomas steps down as chairman after more than ten years. Xavier and Chamberlain become co-chairmen.
  • CEO James Whiting and supporters' representative Tom Cliffe will remain on the board to ensure continuity. Pato is set to join the board as a director, bringing professional football experience.
  • This acquisition follows SAC's failed attempt to purchase Colchester United earlier this year. Colchester chairman Robbie Cowling previously confirmed the consortium's bid exceeded his initial expectations, but negotiations ultimately did not conclude.
