Nigeria Halts Christian Pilgrimages to Holy Land over Middle East Conflict
More than 4,000 Nigerian pilgrims completed the 2025 exercise safely before the government suspended travel due to ongoing Middle East security risks, officials said.
- On Tuesday, the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission announced an immediate suspension of all pilgrimages to Israel in a Lagos briefing and statement signed by Mr Celestine Toruka.
- Security developments in the Middle East prompted the Commission to suspend pilgrimages due to a state of emergency in Israel and restrictions on public gatherings.
- The last batch of 500 pilgrims arrived safely at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on March 3, after the 2025 Main Pilgrimage exercise, which airlifted over 4,000 Nigerians using a Boeing 777-300.
- The suspension applies to both Commission-run and private pilgrimages, halting all trips to Israel until international travel to Israel is deemed safe, the NCPC said.
- Emphasising safety, the NCPC said it is closely monitoring developments and urged prayers for stability, cautioning against actions that could escalate tensions and thanking supporters including First Lady Oluremi Tinubu and President Bola Tinubu.
